Painting Practice
Previs Artist: Mar2019 - Feb2020
From 2019 - 2020 I was lucky enough to be a part of BBC's / HBO's 'His Dark Materials'. I spent my time working in the Previs Department at Painting Practice, reading the script and helping turn the words into a 3D story. This included animating, cinematography, modelling and even post VFX. World creating from the script is a huge challenge and working closely with Framestore and the production designer helped achieve incredible results.
Initially my main focus was cleaning up MoCap for cycle animations used throughout the Previs department, as well creating original animations from scratch and reference, thus creating a library full of useful animations that could be grabbed at anytime and used within Cinema 4D. As my time at Painting Practice progressed and Season 2 really took off I was presented with more heavy environment based work. This included: VFX Compositing, tracking and rotoscoping plates, as well occasionally creating models from sets and real world spots. Which would often be matte painted by the incredible artist in house.
Pictured are some screenshots* from the trailers that I worked on from tracking, through the pipeline until Framestore received it and made the final version.
Unfortunately a lot more of what I worked on has yet to be revealed, but shall be in due time!
*The work I did on each shot varies per screenshot, some I worked through the whole pipeline some I only partially helped with.
